1) How are you? If this interview goes online, it means we have all survived the Maya’s prophecy. In respect to the latter, did you made any foolish promise to anybody, one that you’re now forced to keep?
I’m very well. Ending the year in Italy, which is the country where I proposed to my wife, so I’m excited. With regards to the 2012 thing… Diplo, PSY and 2 Chainz were apparently all in the studio together last month – I think this is what the Mayans were really predicting!
2) I interviewed you about six months ago. What has happened in your life meanwhile?
I turned 30, I got married and I’ve met with a label who will be releasing original OLUGBENGA music next year. So… a lot. I’ve also been back to Japan and Russia to DJ as well as doing the biggest ever shows with Metronomy.
3) The end of the year is always a good excuse for magazines to make some charts and tell their followers who and what they liked. Tell us about phenomenons in music (or even in other fields) you fell in love with during last twelve months.
In music, I really got into the music of the TDE camp this year – Kendrick Lamar and Ab Soul, particularly. In fact, I’d say 2012 is a year when I really fell back in love with rap and rap beats – the TNGHT EP would fall into that category. There have been great releases all the way from the underground to the mainstream.
4) Will you drop any of the tracks you suggested to us in your chart, while performing in your dj set at Q21? Are you excited to be back in Milan for New Year’s Eve?
It’s difficult to say because every set I play is a reaction to the people in the room, but I’ve found that TNGHT’s ‘Higher Ground’ and ‘Waves City’ by Drums of Death find their way in very often – I’ve played those tracks in clubs all over the world and they always get a very strong emotional response.
I had a lot of fun the last time I was in Milan, right down to my last minutes in the city. The cab driver who took me to the airport was a real character – told me he liked English women because of their milky white skin and then admitted he was probably a bit of a pervert! So, I look forward to another very interesting time in the city.
