Giovane progetto proveniente dall’Inghilterra, i Formation sono un duo composto dai fratelli gemelli Will e Matt Ritson. Punk/funk o disco/punk che dir si voglia, il loro suono ricorda da vicino certe atmosfere tanto in voga a metà anni Duemila. Autori sinora di 3 pubblicazioni tra singoli e EP, gli inglesi si esibiranno stasera all’Andrea Doria Concert Hall, in apertura della grande Neneh Cherry per Scenario Preview. Il paragone coi Talking Heads è sicuramente eccessivo, ma i giovani sono di belle speranze.

1) Voi venite dalla zona Sud di Londra, che è una sorta di luogo mitologico per la musica contemporanea. Pensate che la vostra provenienza abbia influenzato la vostra musica? Secondo voi, si può parlare di una scena musicale di South London?
La scena di South London si è un po’ arrestata nell’ultimo periodo a causa dello sviluppo dell’area e della chiusura di molti locali. Quando eravamo più piccoli però era davvero grande, musicisti come Mystery Jets, Tom Vek e Jamie T hanno tutti avuto una grande influenza.
2) La vostra musica è carica di groove, sembra che siate molto concentrati sul comporre ritmi groovy capaci di far ballare la gente. È corretto?
Il groove è essenziale! La nostra filosofia, per dirla con le parole di Phil Anselmo dei Pantera, è “groove, potenza, know-how”.
3) Quando vi siete formati e perché avete scelto il nome Formation?
Sono due anni che suoniamo come Formation. Will se n’è uscito con questo nome mentre lavoravamo a un progetto di musica improvvisata e così è rimasto.
4) Come ci si sente ad essere due fratelli – gemelli peraltro – in una band?
Ci rende le cose facili. Non abbiamo paura di parlarci a cuore aperto e possiamo essere critici senza farci del male.
5) State lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo? Cosa vi aspettate?
Al momento stiamo lavorando su un altro EP, sarà pubblicato verso fine anno. Suonerà enorme!

1) You are from South London, which is a sort of mythological place for contemporary music. Do you think that has an influence on your music? According to you, is there a sort of South London music scene?
The scene in South London has slowed down a little because of the major developments in the area and a lot of music venues being closed down. When we were younger it was great though, musicians like mystery jets, Tom Vek and Jamie t have all been a big influence.
2) Your music is groovy and it seems like you are focused on composing groovy, smart rhythms in order to make people dance. Is it right?
Groove is essential! Our philosophy is taken from the words of Phil Anselmo from the band Pantera “groove, power, know-how”.
3) When did you form the band and why did you choose Formation as a name?
We have been playing as Formation for two years now. Will came up with the name while working on an improvisational music project and it just stuck.
4) What does it feel like to be two twin brothers in a band?
Being brothers in a band makes things easy for us. We’re not afraid to speak our minds and we can be critical without hurting each others feelings.
5) Are you working on something new? What’s your expectations about it?
We are working on another EP at the moment which will come out towards the end of the year. It’s going to sound huge!
