Crackazat – Eye Light (Local Talk)
I completely fell in love with Crackazat’s synth work on this, really refreshing to hear keys which sound like they are actually played in by hand.
Jeff Mills – Gift Of The Hills (Purposemaker)
When it’s time to get locked in with your head down, this is the record for that moment. Jeff Mills’ “Purposemaker” series kicked off the whole tribal loop techno thing in the 90s, but Mills had always intended the tracks featured on that label to be used as tools for house sets as well as techno selections.
Anthony Shake Shakir – Anthony Shake Shakir Meets The BBC (Honest John’s)
Awesome Ngunyuta Dance cut up with added acid, which really throws down at a daytime open air. Great music to enjoy with umbrella cocktails.
Marquis Hawkes – Doornroosje (Aus Music)
If I may say so myself, this is just killing it on every set of mine right now. Designed as a tool to do a job, even when I start a set thinking I’m never going to fit it in because it’s not going to fit with the vibe of the party, it always ends up in there somehow, and has people bouncing off the walls. And it’s my new record, so go out and buy it!
Teddy Pendergrass – Can’t Get Enough (Ron Hardy Edit) (RDY)
You can never beat the classics, and one of the best for me is Ron Hardy’s edit of this Teddy Pendergrass track from 1977.These days it’s hard to appreciate how difficult it was in the past to create edits like this, but back in 1986, it really was a task, having to physically cut 2 inch tape, and then splice it back together, bounce between two reel to reels and other such early studio wizardry. Ron was a master, the world of dance music worldwide would look very different today without his influence, which is so often overlooked.
