The great public got to know you through your singing voice, in the John Talabot´s album ƒIN. I would like to know when you discovered that you were able to mix your vocal style with electronic, dance oriented music and what brought you to push it more to the fore in your productions, like it happened in the case of that album.
Well, we worked together in Destiny and So Will Be Now, we didn´t record vocals until the last minute. My featuring was expected to be as a co-producer, not just because I was singing. In the end we recorded some vocals, but actually So Will Be Now is not my voice. I started using my vocals as a tool to add some organic elements in a song, hidden with lot of reverb, but now I feel more confident, I guess this is a natural progression.
Still, not many know that you have a background as a sound engineer, working in advertising for example. How do you remember your beginnings in that field and how do you think that kind of experience influenced your production style?
Yeah, I think it didn´t influenced me in a musical way, but definitely in terms of software and editing skills. I used to work almost for two years doing quality controls for the tv show Lost and four years mixing movies for Disney Pixar so yeah, I learnt a lot in so many ways in such a pro level.
Your new EP is released by Counter, a Ninja Tune imprint. As always, when we get the chance to interview artists that release music for that legendary label, we would like to know which are your favourite Ninja Tune acts or records?
Ninja Tune has a solid roster, now that it comes to my mind, recent releases of Max Graef, Seven Davis Jr, Bonobo, Maribou State to name a few, and classic producers like Kid Koala, Dj Vadim, Flanger, Mr. Scuff, there are a lot! I remember a great compilation of late 98 or 99 called Ninja Cuts with Amon Tobin, Herbaliser, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dj Vadim… so good.
Your new EP will include three tracks sang by yourself. Can you tell us which was your approach to the lyrics?
For this release I wanted to write real things for the first time. Personal things that happened not long time ago. I used to write some words here and there, then looped and that’s it, but this EP is a big upgrade to me in terms of music skills, like recording acoustic instruments as drums or writing my own lyrics.
The record also includes a song that features the vocals of Empress Of. Can you tell us something about your collaboration?
She was touring in Europe playing with Purity Ring and she texted me that the last show of the tour will be in Madrid -my hometown- so I asked her why she doesn´t stay a few days in town, do some tourism, and some chilling after a long tour. So she finally stayed for a week, and we went in my studio and I showed her this untitled rough demo that has originally my vocals, but I felt that it wasn´t as effective as Lorely’s -Empress Of real name- voice, so we recorded her version and we liked what we did. She is the best.
Can you reveal us which are your plans for the rest of the year and if you are already working at some new music, maybe at your debut album?
I´m working at a lot of new music. I´m doing some club EP’s, now that I’m djing a lot I want to start playing my own tunes. (laughs) I´m also working at Talabot’s second album, we are recording in a beautiful island away from everything in Norway.
