The record you own you are most proud of:
Baby Huey – Living Legend
I know what made me buy this record in the first place: the cover. I mean his portrait. I don’t know if you have it in mind but it gets right through me. Everything about his face communicates a precise feeling, that you also find in the record whilst listening to it. Struggle, energy, anger, love, sadness, the immensity of emotions bursting out into a microphone. I picked it up at a dusty local digging spot in London for less than £10. I didn’t listen to it beforehand. I often trust cover and year. Only after I played it I found out what record that was. Apart from the obvious samples that it contains, the power of his voice and of the band are both overwhelming. The dynamic is incredible. It’s basically a live album, you can tell by the way they play that they just got into the studio and recorded everything they had to say. Hard Times is and will always be a classic, but I also love his version of A Change Is Gonna Come one of my favourite classic songs.
